What are Plankton?

Plankton are microscopic organisms that float on the surface of water. There are two major types of plankton: Phytoplankton and Zooplankton.

Phytoplankton are microscopic plants that are found near the surface of the water where there is plenty of sunlight to support photosynthesis.

Zooplankton are microscopic animals that depend on phytoplankton for food. Zooplankton are usually weak swimmers and drift along with the currents. Their sizes usually range from one-tenth of a millimeter to four millimeters, which is smaller than the head of a pin.
