What is the mesosphere?

The third layer of the Earth's atmosphere is called the mesosphere. “Mesosphere” is derived from the Greek word mesos, meaning middle. So the mesosphere is the middle layer of the atmosphere. It is the coldest of the five layers of Earth's atmosphere: the temperature dips as low as -120°C (-184°F). The mesosphere is so cold that clouds that are present here are essentially frozen water vapour. The most important function of the mesosphere is the destruction of the meteors that fall on Earth. About 40-50 tons of meteors fall to Earth every day. The mesosphere burns these meteors when they enter the layer.
